January 2026 Awards Afternoon

Our Awards & General Meeting for the 2025 Season was held on Sunday 15th February at The Gavel, Penrith Auction Mart. We had a delicious buffet from Katy Edgar follwed by a fabulous talk from Kate McMorris, the trekking vet. Below are some notes from the afternoon as well as the results from the awards.

Note From the Chairman

It gives me great pleasure to reflect on what has been a truly fabulous year for the branch.

In 2025 we delivered five pleasure rides including the return of the Tebay and one national ride — a fantastic achievement for a small branch and a real testament to the dedication of our volunteers, riders and supporters. Our ride calendar continues to grow, and it’s exciting to see such enthusiasm for our events.

Looking ahead, 2026 promises to be just as busy. With that in mind, I’d encourage anyone who can spare a hand — or even rope in a family member — to come and help. Even a couple of hours makes a real difference. Our sport runs on goodwill, teamwork and the willingness to step forward, and every contribution counts.

Many people in this room came into the sport looking for something different — perhaps a new challenge, or simply a change of direction. What we all share is the enjoyment of a sport that allows us to spend hours in the saddle with our four-legged companions, embracing a sense of adventure and exploring new places. There’s something very special about that partnership and the journeys it takes us on.

Times are changing. In a world shaped by social media, it’s easy to compare ourselves to others. In a world where costs continue to rise, we all have to make difficult decisions. Each of us has other commitments, the weather hasn’t always been kind, and equestrian sport increasingly finds itself under the spotlight. Yet through all of that, the heart of what we do remains the same.

Let’s not forget why we ride.

Whether you take part in 16km pleasure rides, compete over longer distances with ambitions of reaching international level, or support from the sidelines as a volunteer, crew member or official — you are all part of this community. Every achievement matters. Every kilometre completed is something to be proud of. Every role plays its part.

This afternoon, we celebrate those achievements. We celebrate the friendships formed, the adventures had and the memories made. And we look forward with optimism and determination to everything that 2026 will bring.

Thank you all for being part of our branch — and here’s to another fantastic year ahead.

Chairman's Champion

It’s a real pleasure to nominate Sheila for the Chairman’s Champion award.

Over many years, Sheila has been a true stalwart of the club — someone we have all come to rely on without question. When the finances needed steady hands and clear thinking, Sheila stepped in, took them on, and has managed them with absolute dependability and integrity ever since. It’s one of those roles that often goes unnoticed, yet the club simply could not function without it.

Beyond that, Sheila has given years and years of loyal support to Emma, always offering experience, judgement, and encouragement when it was most needed. That depth of knowledge and willingness to help comes only from long service and genuine commitment and love for her daughter.

Reliable, experienced, and quietly devoted, Sheila represents everything this award stands for. For her unwavering support, hard work, and dedication to the club over so many years, I can think of no one more deserving of the Chairman’s Champion award.

This year we introduced a new award, the Helper Award. This year these were awarded to:
